Artist William Villalongo and urbanist Shraddha Ramani talk with scholar and curator Tiffany Barber about their collaborative portfolio Printing Black America: Du Bois’s Data Portraits in the 21st Century in which the duo reimagines W.E.B. Du Bois’s iconic 1900 data visualizations that explained institutionalized racism to the world. These transformed visualizations recast Du Bois's distillations and interrogate contemporary Black life. The production of the prints was shared across six print publishers, including Powerhouse Arts Printshop.

Stone lithography is a traditional printmaking process that relies on the immiscibility of grease and water. In this hands-on demonstration, participants will draw on a smooth limestone surface using greasy lithographic crayons. Robert Blackburn Printmaking Studio’s printer Fiacco will guide the group through the process of preparing and etching the stone, washing away the original drawing, and inking the surface while sponging to keep the non-image areas ink-free.

Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (RBPMW) is the oldest and longest-running community print shop in the United States. Blackburn (1920-2003), a pioneer in collaborative printmaking, played a key role in reviving and expanding access to stone lithography. Learn more here.

Fiacco is a printer and artist who recently returned from a year at the Tamarind Institute. They began interning and volunteering at RBPMW while studying at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

This demonstration is first-come, first-served with a capacity of 20-25 people to ensure everyone has a clear sightline. No tickets are required.

Visitors to Poster House, the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the art and history of posters, often ask, “What’s the difference between a poster and a print?” Join Poster House Executive Director and Curator Angelina Lippert in conversation with President and Principal Auctioneer of Swann Auction Galleries Nicholas Lowry as they attempt to answer this burning question. Known for their humor and banter as much as their incredible knowledge of poster history, this delightful duo is sure to entertain with their hot takes on prints vs. posters.

    Bios:
Angelina Lippert is the Executive Director and Curator of Poster House in New York City, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the art and history of the poster. She holds an MA in the art of the Russian Avant-Garde from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and a BA in theology and art history from Smith College. She is the author of The Art Deco Poster and co-author of Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters, and has lectured at SVA, The Cooper Union, NYU, Pratt, The New York Times, the American Center Moscow, Columbia University, and The Sotheby's Institute of Art. She was a recipient of the Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curator through Hyperallergic, and has written for The Muse by the Clio Awards as well as the New York Journal of Books.

Nicholas D. Lowry, Nicho, to those who know him, was born into a family of antiquarian book dealers and was raised and educated in New York City as well as attending schools in England and Germany. He is President and Principal Auctioneer of Swann Auction Galleries, the third generation in his family to hold that title. He is also the Director of Swann’s Vintage Posters Department. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on vintage posters, Lowry has spent nearly 30 years serving as poster appraiser on the PBS television show Antiques Roadshow, on which he appears regularly.
After graduating Cornell University with a Bachelor’s degree in history in 1990, Nicho settled in Prague for four years where he worked as an English teacher, entrepreneur, radio presenter, journalist, and guidebook author. Upon his return to New York he joined Swann Galleries and was named President in 2001.

Not one to sit still, Nicholas wears many poster-related and art industry hats: auctioneer, specialist, cataloguer, lecturer, curator, historian, author, enthusiast, and collector. He has appeared in two documentary films, The Booksellers (2019) and more recently in Identita (2024) a film about Czech graphic design. He is currently working on a book about vintage Czech travel posters.

Lowry is actively involved with many worthy causes, and presides over as many as 20 charity auctions all across America every year.
